Internship Report at Hanshin Expressway Company Limited

From Nov 29, 2021 to Dec 10, 2021, I joined Hanshin Expressway Engineering Company Limited for two weeks internship training.

Hanshin Expressway Engineering is one the subsidiaries of Hanshin Expressway Company Limited. The Hanshin Expressway Engineering Co.,Ltd is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of Hanshin expressway routes.

There also are other subsidiary companies of Hanshin expressway Company limited for different sectors such as toll collection, patrol and R&D. The total length in operation of 258.1km Hanshin Expressway routes formed mostly with viaduct sections servicing 709,646 trips of daily traffic volume.


The internship training included a lot of lectures and site visits for inspection, maintenance and civil works construction sites of Hanshin expressway. The lectures were based on the practices and techniques of Hanshin Expressway currently used for the inspection and maintenance of their expressways.


From that lectures, I witnessed how well organized of Hanshin expressway on documentation, planning and coordination for every engineering works. One of the noticeable things was utilization of digital devices for monitoring and inspection of structures. From the high-quality motion sensors, ultrasonic and electromagnetic devices to the digital devices which can easily get from market such as ipad and iphone are also utilizing in Hanshin expressway for inspecting, monitoring and data recording of structures.


I also joined the meeting for evaluation of defects as an observer and it truly was the very good experience for me to see through how things work in here.


Finally, I also got a chance to visit the civil work construction site of Hanshin Expressway, the Yodogawa – Sagan Route project which includes cut and cover section, open section and viaduct ramp section. The ground improvement method for soft soil treatment in that site also is very interesting for me.
